The fruit slot machine is one of the most recognizable icons in the history of modern gambling. It all began in 1895 in San Francisco, when mechanic Charles Fey invented the "Liberty Bell", a three-reel machine displaying five symbols: horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a Liberty Bell. The success was immediate and the three-reel formula became the standard for more than a century.
It was in the early 20th century, faced with a wave of anti-gambling laws across the United States, that fruit symbols made their appearance. In 1909, the Industry Novelty Company invented "chewing gum" machines: players supposedly won packs of fruit-flavored gum. The reels displayed cherries, lemons, oranges, plums and melons — the flavors of the brand's chewing gums. The trick allowed operators to sidestep the prohibition of gambling by pretending the machines dispensed candy rather than cash.
The "BAR" icon, also typical of classic slots, was born in that same era: it originally represented the logo of the Bell-Fruit Gum Company. The lucky "7" appeared later, around the 1930s and 1940s, as the symbol of a top jackpot. These three elements — fruits, BAR and red 7 — still form the universal visual signature of fruit machines today.
In the 1960s, the Bally company introduced the first electromechanical machines, such as "Money Honey" (1963). They enabled bigger payouts, automatic payment and much smoother gameplay. Fruits remained the dominant theme, as the association between gambling and cherries or 7s had become deeply cultural.
With the arrival of video poker and electronic machines in the 1980s, and then the Internet from the 2000s onward, slot machines diversified enormously: Egyptian themes, adventures, movies, TV shows. Yet "fruit machines" remain extremely popular, especially in the United Kingdom where they are omnipresent in pubs and arcades, and in the nostalgic spirit of Las Vegas casinos.
