The letter wheel has its roots in 18th-century educational board games, when European teachers were looking for playful ways to teach the alphabet to children. The first alphabet wheels were hand-painted wooden discs used in bourgeois salons to liven up vocabulary games. These modest ancestors would give rise to one of the most popular game-show formats in the world.

The concept truly took off in 1975 with the creation of "Wheel of Fortune" by Merv Griffin in the United States. The show, which uses a huge mechanical wheel to choose amounts and letters, quickly became the most-watched game show in America. The principle is simple but addictive: contestants spin the wheel, call out a letter and try to guess a hidden word or phrase. The success was such that the format was adapted in more than 60 countries.

In France, the adaptation "La Roue de la Fortune" appeared on TF1 in 1987, hosted by Michel Royer and then Christian Morin. The show was a huge popular hit and stayed on the air for more than 25 years. The letter wheel became a cultural staple, tied to the afternoon TV of millions of French viewers. Phrases such as "I'd like an A" or "I'll spin the wheel" entered everyday speech.

Beyond television, the letter wheel has established itself as a major teaching tool. Teachers around the world use it to make learning the alphabet interactive and fun. Cognitive-science studies show that the random, visual side of the wheel boosts student engagement and improves letter retention, especially among young children aged 4 to 7.

The "petit bac" game (also known as "Categories" or "Stadt Land Fluss") is probably the most widespread use of random letter draws. Played in schoolyards and at parties for generations, it consists of finding words starting with a drawn letter in various categories (animal, city, first name, job, etc.). This simple yet effective game builds vocabulary, quick thinking and general knowledge.

Today, the digital letter wheel has taken over from physical versions. Web and mobile apps offer an instant experience, with smooth animations and customisation options impossible with a mechanical wheel. Automatic exclusion of letters already drawn, results history and online sharing have modernised this timeless classic. The ABC Wheel remains a versatile tool, just as useful for education as it is for entertainment.
